Would you guys prefer to not have a map available to the players and have to explore in order to create one?

There should be a basic map with all the systems but pehaps any/all details can only be obtained by visiting the system or obtaining the information by other means.

I believe that you should provide a basic map so that newbies can get the feel of the game without the complexity of worrying about the unknown. This "known" area of the map should carry the player for maybe the 1st 10 turns. This would allow for a corp to become an exploraton company offering sale of information.
The counter to my argument is that in games where the map must be discovered, inevitably there are players who spoil the discovery process by providing secret information to their friends.
In either case, keeping some of the map hidden does add texture to the game. I recommend it.
